Gay service members suing federal government for benefits
Just a few weeks after the official repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, a group of married LGBT service members are suing the federal government for equal benefits.
Even though DADT has been repealed, LGBT service members who are married to same-sex partners are denied the benefits that straight married couples get - benefits like medical care, housing, child care and military ID cards - because DOMA will not recognize their marriages.
“As plaintiffs, we are fighting to receive the same benefits and opportunities as our married heterosexual counterparts. This discrimination causes undue financial and emotional hardship for our families. As a cancer survivor, who has been recently diagnosed with a recurrence, I worry every day that my health may take a turn for the worse, and Karen would be unable to receive the survivor’s benefits to help take care of our daughter. We are only asking for fair and equitable treatment as a recognized family,” Morgan said today.
This could potentially become something huge - what a way to show the government that the work is nowhere near done. Details will come as they develop.
Oh look it’s Mr. Kitty. He’s a hipcat. Hip to the youknow and the don’tknow and you’ve probably never even thought of the noises he likes to listen to when he isn’t having his picture taken. I don’t know who took this picture of Mr. Kitty, but I found it on Piccsy and oh my God I’m making this my wallpaper. This is the kinda cat that would have a dear pet fish in a bowl. He likes it because it’s ironic. Cats. Hipsters. Obscure music. Irony.
(EDIT: I have been informed that all credit for the photo of Mr. Kitty should be directed here)
I am in love.
I was also just thinking about how if I get new glasses, I want to get huge ones.
Does this make me a hipster…?
